David Porter Hillhouse, traveler, editor, and college trustee, was born 8 May 1791, probably in Washington, Georgia, was educated in the "North," and died 8 July 1851, in Augusta, Georgia. His father, David Hillhouse, ran a publishing and printing house and edited the Washington GAZETTE (became the MONITOR), a weekly newspaper which was edited by his mother, Sarah Porter Hillhouse, after her husband's death.
